Well, 2018 was an exciting year as we saw a launch of many exciting phones. Right from the low end to high end, we've got it all covered in our top phones of the year guide. Let's get started.
1. OnePlus 6T/McLaren Edition
Well, I guess you had already predicted the winner for 2018. Starting at about 37,999 the OnePlus 6T features 2.8Ghz Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 6/8/10GB RAM option. The regular edition is a 128GB model whereas the McLaren edition is a 256GB model. The screen size is a whopping 6.41 inch with an7 in-display fingerprint scanner. The back shooter is a 20+16MP dual camera with OIS, SSM, ISR, Nightscape mode and Studio lighting. The regular variant supports fast charging, and the McLaren edition supports warp charging.
Cons:
- They removed the headphone jack. Yes, they got rid of the headphone jack.
- The edges of the screen have a high degree of curve, and as a result, you lose screen real estate.

2. Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus
This guy came in at the second position and had won the hearts of many people. When it was launched, it was not an eye catcher but ever since the price cut it's got the attention of a lot of people.
It features a 6.2-inch QHD super AMOLED display which has been measured as one of the very best around right now, with super colours, high dynamic range and, mostly, the very best viewing experience you can have on a mobile device, 12-megapixel dual rear camera, and an 8MP front shooter. It comes with 6GB Ram and 64 GB/256 GB variant.
Price - 52,900₹ onwards.
3. Huawei Mate 20 Pro
The Mate 20 Pro packs a huge 6.39-inch QHD OLED display giving you a considerable amount of space for gaming and movies and HDR10 support ensures everything looks excellent. There is a wide notch at the top of the display though. It comes with Kirin 980 Octa Core SoC with 6GB RAM, 128GB/256GB storage option. It also has a fast charge system which claims to charge your battery up to 70% within 30 minutes.
In the photography department, this phone features 40MP Leica triple rear camera with 40MP (wide angle lens)+20MP (ultra wide angle lens)+8MP (telephoto) + all the AI optimization. It has a 24MP front camera with support 3D depth sensing.

4. ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2
The M2 was probably the most awaited launch of the year as ASUS was the last company in the mid-tier segment to announce their product for 2018-19. ASUS did take their time and came out with a product that put others to shame. If you’re looking for a smartphone that’s robust and powerful, both, inside and outside on a budget, then your search ends here. Meet the ZenFone Max Pro M2.
The phone comes loaded with the new Snapdragon 660 processor, 3/4/6GB RAM, and a 32/64GB variant. The display size is 6.26 FHD+ Full View display with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The camera is a 12MP back shooter with a 5MP portrait depth sensor. The camera can record videos up to 4K which no other phone is the same category offers. The front-facing shooter is a 13MP with LED flash. All this topped with a humongous 5000MAh battery which lasts longer than your usual day.

5. Pixel 3/XL & iPhone XS/Max
Here they are, the top phones from the two of the greatest rivals. You might be wondering why have we positioned it in the last place. Well, let's see why.

The Pixel
Starting with the Pixel's lineup from Google, the phone has great hardware inside and a fantastic camera which has also been awarded DXO marks camera of the year title. Talking about specs, the phone clocks a 2.5Ghz Snapdragon 845 coupled with 4GB of RAM. It comes with a 6.3inch QHD OLED display, Android Pie and a 12.2MP back shooter and a dual 8MP front shooter.
The problem comes with that disgusting notch. When the leaks came out before the launch, everyone was hoping Google would surprise them by announcing something different. Google did surprise everyone, but by announcing the same phone which everyone dreaded of. The notch is huge compared to all the other phones out there and kills the display or viewing experience. The other department Google screwed up was the software. So much as so that a famous YouTube creator went on to rant about it. The battery life isn't great either on both the phones. The price tag is also a bit too high starting at ₹78,500.
They also launched the Slate tablet based on Chrome OS this year, and it doesn't have a single positive review or recommendation. Google was not on their A-game this year with technology. It looks like they focused all their attention to the phone's camera. The pixel 3 on the other hand, does not have the notch and has a smaller display.

iPhone
Coming to the iPhones, the day they were launched they immediately got slack for their expensive pricing. The iPhones this year comes eqipped with the upgraded A12 bionic chip, a neural engine, an upgraded RAM and a beautiful OLED display. The primary camera is dual 12MP, and the selfie camera is a 7MP sensor. Although the OS is great and optimized, the huge price tag on the phone made people switch to different brands.
As Apple was criticised a lot for the price and the intentional battery decaying scam which was bought to light this year, it's a no-no for us. Only hard-core Apple fans will opt for this phone. The sales were off the charts due to the price and dethroned Apple from being the No.1 company in the world. The models start from ₹99,000 and go all the way up to ₹1,41,000. With phone robberies on the rise in the country, one needs a thoughtful consideration to get this phone. You might want to take a look at the iPhone Xr instead if you don't want to spend a fortune on a smartphone.
